This police box or “koban” (交番) from Sudacho, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo was built during the turn of the 20th century. Police boxes are mini-police-stations in neighborhoods allowing officers to interact with locals on a more personal basis. Koban are manned 24/7 and are ubiquitous throughout all of Japan. A round red mail collection box (left) can still be found in rural areas and older neighborhoods. The fire hydrant next to the mailbox is a relic of the past. Nowadays, they are mostly positioned below the street with a manhole cover.

A simple farmhouse owned by the Tenmyo family who were adiminstrators (designated “mayor” by the shogunate) of Unoki Village. Unoki later became a highly industrial zone of Tokyo’s Ota Ward. Built in the latter half of the 18th century, the architectural style including a thatched roof with gable reflects the high status enjoyed by the Tenmyo family. I wonder what happened to their residential house? Maybe it was destroyed during the war, by an earthquake, or became a victim of urban expansion.

Seal of Kawano Shoten (an oiled paper umbrella wholesaler), which was located in Edo Ward, Toko. This seal is on the rain gutter of the shop which was built in the 1920s. Kawano Shoten made handmade Japanese oil-paper umbrellas. The  seal shows a rigid arch on top, which comes from the top stroke of the kanji character “傘” read as “kasa” meaning “umbrella”. The character below the arch of the seal is read as “ka” which could represent the “ka” in Kawano (company’s name) or the “ka” in “kasa” (the Japanese word for umbrella), or it could be a play on words and represent both!

Large gable over the entrance to Kodakara-yu, a public bathhouse (sento, 銭湯), which was located in northeastern Tokyo, was in operation until 1929. The gable was built in the the miyazukuri style as a result of carpenters experienced in building temples and shrines applying their skills to rebuilding sento after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1929, and again after the war as a means of lifting the sprits of local residents. Throughout all Japan, only sento in the Tokyo-Yokohama region feature sento built in the miyazukuri style.
