Cooling Towers

I can recall visiting friends near the Kawasaki industrial area over 30 years ago when factories and production facilities on the waterfront of Tokyo Bay spewed noxious gases, dark smoke, and gritty particulates into the air that would burn your eyes and nose, and left a gray film on clean laundry that was hung out to dry on sunny, windless days. 

These days, the air seems remarkably clean, locals enjoy fishing on the nearby wharfs, and small green parks with greenery have flourished. I am not sure if environmental policies have been strengthened, if  production and associated pollution were shipped overseas to cheaper labor markets, or if a combination of both have occurred. 

Regardless, the many oil refineries lining the shores of Tokyo Bay offer great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors somewhat and offer photographers a chance to enjoy the aesthetics of industrial sites.

Red and White Chimney

This shot was taken on a man-made island off the coastline of Kawasaki city in Tokyo Bay.

It seems that there are three different petrochemical companies operating on this tiny little parcel of land reclaimed from the ocean.

As I referenced in an earlier post, this area has dramatically become much cleaner than it was when I first visited Kawasaki back in the 1980s. In fact, Wikipedia states that Kawasaki in general was “…long associated with grime, labor unrest, organized crime and pollution-related diseases…” and that the city made efforts to improve living conditions for her residents starting in the 1990s.

This timeframe closely coincides with my own personal experience and that of friends who live in the city close to the bay.

Mitsuike Park

After following me around the ponds at Mitsuike Park on a warm spring evening, she had worked up a “sweat” and urged me to let  her take a break under some cherry tree blossoms. The park was full of children playing soccer, riding bicycles, and playing chase, several young parents were also out on a stroll with their baby in a stroller. About half of the visitors to the park, however, seemed to be there just to enjoy the cherry tree blossoms.

A commuter train on the Tokyu-Toyoko Line pulling into Futako-Tamagawa Station, which sits on Tokyo side of Tama River. Tama River overflowed her banks during the onslaught of Typhoon Hagibis this last October. The local citizens and government have worked hard to restore this area of Setagaya Ward (Tokyo) back to a sense of normalcy. Aside from plastic garbage stuck in the tops of a few trees, and huge mounds of mud and natural debris, the parks along the river’s edge have been restored and cleaned. Many elderly were out on a stroll, young families were flying kites, owners were walking their dogs, and joggers were out running along the river bank this cold and cloudy day.

Originally built in 1910, the “Former Shimizu Shoin Cottage” was dismantled and reassembled by the Shimizu Corporation for use at the Futako-Tamagawa Park as a public service to help preserve artifacts of Japan’s architectural heritage. The cottage was originally used by a Shimizu executive over 100 years ago and was built using Japanese hemlock and mulberry--trees that have sadly become rare after old-growth forests were clear-cut for lumber during the post-WWII reconstruction period.

Took a break near Gotenmba (closest exit to Mt. Fuji) on the Tomei Expressway while on my way to make a visit at the cemetery during the New Year's holidays. Nowadays, all the major rest stops on the expressway have dog runs where you can take a break and let your pooch work off some of that pent up energy. It only takes milliseconds before they start the butt-smelling dance!
