InterContinental Yokohama Grand, the hotel on the left that is shaped like a sail, is a popular destination for newlyweds and their guests while staying in Yokohama. Cosmo Clock 21 was the world’s tallest Ferris wheel in 1999, standing at 369 feet (112.5 meters), and is surrounded by wedding chapels, hotels, an amusement park, shopping centers, and docks for dinner cruise ships that sail out into the harbor.

Long exposure of the Red Brick Warehouse No. 1
Built in 1913, the warehouse was one of the first customs buildings in Yokohama. The warehouse survived the huge 1923 earthquake that leveled the rest of Yokohama and Tokyo. After surviving air raids during WWII, the warehouse came under the control of the U.S. forces until 1956. After extensive restoration and structural reinforcement, the buildings were opened to the public in 2002 becoming a popular destination for family outings, couples on a date, artists of all kinds, and tourists from the world over. Many events large and small featuring an international flare are held year round at the warehouse and the plaza next door.

Long Exposure of the Yokohama Customs Building aka "The Queen"
The original customs building was destroyed in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. A new building incorporating reinforced  concrete and steel was completed in 1934. During the 1960s, the city of Yokohama took stewardship of the building as it had become one of the many symbols of the city and converted it into a museum focusing on the Yokohama’s history as Japan’s gateway to the West. Much of the original Romanesque art style with beige porcelain tiles throughout the interior have been preserved creating an opportunity to slip back to a time when architectural aesthetics were just as important as functionality.

The "Cascade Garden" features a stepped water cascade on a hill crowded with over 700 plants of about 80 varieties of roses on the site of the former British Consulate General's residence, which was  in use until about the late 1860s. Yokohama city had the foresight to preserve the old buildings and gardens dating back more than 155 years. During full bloom, the park swarms with couples on a date, young families, and elderly couples holding hands.

Honmoku Park

Taking a rest at Honmoku Sancho Park in Naka Ward, Yokohama. The park connects numerous hilltops that once looked over the sandy beaches of Negishi Bay in what became the Port of Yokohama. With rapid development of land reclamation for urban and industrial use, the beaches have vanished. Fortunately, the park offers a great escape from the industrial and urban hum of Negishi Bay, and has preserved some of the natural habitat that has always existed in this part of Yokohama.
