The "Cascade Garden" features a stepped water cascade on a hill crowded with over 700 plants of about 80 varieties of roses on the site of the former British Consulate General's residence, which was  in use until about the late 1860s. Yokohama city had the foresight to preserve the old buildings and gardens dating back more than 155 years. During full bloom, the park swarms with couples on a date, young families, and elderly couples holding hands.

Long exposure of the Minato Mirai waterfront district as seen from Yamashita Park. Yamashita Park was the brainchild of Marshall Martin, a weathy British expatriate who convinced the government to use debris from the aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 to fill a portion of the bay and create a beautiful park and dock for the Hikawa-maru, an ocean liner that sailed between Japan and North America.

Honmoku Park

Taking a rest at Honmoku Sancho Park in Naka Ward, Yokohama. The park connects numerous hilltops that once looked over the sandy beaches of Negishi Bay in what became the Port of Yokohama. With rapid development of land reclamation for urban and industrial use, the beaches have vanished. Fortunately, the park offers a great escape from the industrial and urban hum of Negishi Bay, and has preserved some of the natural habitat that has always existed in this part of Yokohama.

Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall

Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall aka "Jack's Tower" paid for the local citizens and erected in 1917 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of Yokohama Port. The building was designed in the Neo-renaissance style The interior was destroyed by fires after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. With the exterior intact, the interior was restored 4 years later. For years, foreign sailors visited the three towers, King's Tower, Queen's Tower, and Jack's Towers as symbols to pray to for safety before heading back to sea for their next port or h ome country. The Hall offers great insight into the confluence of trendy European design and American designs combined with a sense of Japanese traditional culture.

Just one of many motifs used throughout the interior of the Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall (aka Jack's Tower) reflecting the Neo-renaissance design used throughout the building, which was built in 1917. Amazingly, the building remained standing after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and miraculously survived the fire bombing raid of 454 B-29s on May 29th. During the allied occupation following the war, (1945 to 1958), the U.S. Army used this building as a movie theater for U.S. soldiers and sailors.

Stained glass image depicting the sidewheel-steam frigate, USS Powhatan, under the command of Commodore M. C. Perry on his mission to deliver a letter from President Fillmore forcefully demanding that the Japanese Emperor open ports of trade with American ships. The eventual Treaty of Kanagawa was signed on March 5, 1854 in the tiny fishing village of Yokohama. Yokohama Port quickly expanded trade with the U.S., France, the U.K., and Russia transforming the village of Yokohama into a vibrant metropolitan port city welcoming cultures, technology, art, and ideas for political reform from around the world into Japan.

One of the domes of the Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall, which adopted the Tatsuno Free Classic Style of architecture. The architect and son of a samurai, Tatsuno Kingo, was educated in the UK and traveled throughout Europe. Completed in 1989, the Yokohama Bay Bridge is a three-span cable-stayed bridge standing at 460 meters high (1,510 feet) that connects the ports of Yokohama and Tokyo. Although it experienced extreme shaking for 10 minutes during the great earthquake of 2011, the bridge suffered no structural damage! A tall bridge in its day, luxury liners are now too big to pass under. Fortunately, sleek, classic liners like the Queen Elizabeth (QE3) are able to pass under the bridge at low tide and dock in Yokohama to great fanfare.

Shonan Hiratsuka Beach Park

Calling to my border collie to join me in the waves at Shonan Bellmare Hiratsuka Beach Park located about 36 km southwest of Yokohama, which is about a 40-minute drive on the expressway, or an 80-minute drive from Tokyo. Once a Day

Seeds were sown.

Fruits of labor grew.

A tempest raged on the horizon.

Time, a soul, and a heartbeat stolen.

Despairing numbness.

Blinding silence.

Sinking in the abyss.

View of Red Brick Warehouse No. 1 and plaza from a museum window in Warehouse No. 2. Construction of Warehouse No. 2 was completed in 1911, and No. 1 was completed in 1913. Most of Yokohama was destroyed by the massive 1923 earthquake, but both warehouses remained in relatively better condition due to modern building techniques. In 1945, the U.S. Army took control of the Port and used both warehouses for military supplies. After 10 years of restoration work, the city of Yokohama turned the warehouses into a major cultural and commercial center that attracts visitors from the world over.
