Futako-Tamagawa

A commuter train on the Tokyu-Toyoko Line pulling into Futako-Tamagawa Station, which sits on Tokyo side of Tama River. Tama River overflowed her banks during the onslaught of Typhoon Hagibis this last October. The local citizens and government have worked hard to restore this area of Setagaya Ward (Tokyo) back to a sense of normalcy. Aside from plastic garbage stuck in the tops of a few trees, and huge mounds of mud and natural debris, the parks along the river’s edge have been restored and cleaned. Many elderly were out on a stroll, young families were flying kites, owners were walking their dogs, and joggers were out running along the river bank this cold and cloudy day.

Originally built in 1910, the “Former Shimizu Shoin Cottage” was dismantled and reassembled by the Shimizu Corporation for use at the Futako-Tamagawa Park as a public service to help preserve artifacts of Japan’s architectural heritage. The cottage was originally used by a Shimizu executive over 100 years ago and was built using Japanese hemlock and mulberry--trees that have sadly become rare after old-growth forests were clear-cut for lumber during the post-WWII reconstruction period.

Hakone Shrine

Young fern growing from the side of a wall made of clay and alternating layers of recyled Japanese roof tiles near the south gate of the Hakone Checkpoint. Such  walls (sotobei 外塀) were typically used to enclose, gardens, tea house, and aristocratic homes. Today, they can still be found around Buddhist temples and throughout Kyoto.

Southern gate (Kyoto side) to the historical Hakone Checkpoint on the shores of Lake Ashino in the Hakone mountain range located halfway between Tokyo and Mt. Fuji. The checkpoint was used by the Edo Shogunate from 1619 until 1868 to inspect travelers, and feudal lords with their entourage of family, samurai, and staff. Feudal lords were required to leave their wives and children in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and return to their castles every other year. The shogun basically held the families as hostages to ensure there were no rebellions. The checkpoint includes historically accurate reconstructions of gates, fences, officer housing, prison, and lookout tower, using the same tools and techniques from over 400 years ago. Even the dark blue paint is made of the original mixture of persimmon juice and charcoal.

Leaves of a "weeping fern" (Lepisorus thunbergianus) with small dark spores at the ends of each leaf. This is an unusual fern that only grows on old trees covered in moss. All the trees, shrubs, mosses and grasses of Onshi-Hakone-Koen Park have been meticulously manicured and nurtured since 1886 when the grounds were originally part of the imperial Hakone Palace, which was a summer retreat for the imperial family and famous guests including Prince Edward from the UK who visited in 1922. After two major earthquakes destroyed the palace, combined with austerity measures resulting from WWII, the imperial family donated the grounds to Kanagawa Prefecture for use as a public park.

Main entrance/exit of Onshi-Hakone Park, which was built as a part of the imperial family's summer retreat in 1884. The location was decided at the recommendation of a German physician, Dr. Erwin Balz, whose studies focused on preventative medicine. After climbing the cedar-tree-lined 89 steps, a small clearing appears revealing the main Hakone Shrine complex. On both sides of the gate, there are huge komainu (lion-like dogs) guarding the shrine. The 1,260-year-old shrine was visited by many warlords who prayed for success in battle and peace in their territories. Nowadays, visitors pray for safe delivery of a baby, purification of one's soul, safety while driving, and economic fortune. For some visitors, the shrine is considered to be a so-called "power spot" where you can "feel in-tune with nature or the surrounding elements."

Originally established in the year 757, the Nine-Headed-Dragon Shrine [Kuzuryu-jinja] reveres a nine-headed dragon. According to ancient legend, the dragon who lived at the bottom of Lake Ashi demanded a human sacrifice from the local villagers. A monk named Mangan Jyonin saved the villagers by subduing the dragon causing it to renounce its evil ways. The dragon became revered as a dragon king, and these days, a festival is held every year on July 31st to celebrate the nine-headed dragon king.

This torii gate serves two purposes. First, this torii gate indicates "entrance" from the shore of Ashinko Lake to Hakone Shrine which sits 213 meters (700 feet) up on the hill behind the gate. This particular gate is unique in that there are not so many throughout all of Japan that have been built directly over the water. Second, this torii gate is named "Heiwa-no-Torii" (Gate of Peace), which was erected in 1951 to commemorate the Treaty of San Francisco where Japan concluded peace with 48 nations to formally end WWII.

Dairin-ji Temple

Lion-Dog
The lion-dog creature (komainu in Japanese) was introduced to Japan in the 6th century from India via the Silk Road. Nowadays, the komainu are typically pairs of stone or metal statues placed outdoors near the gate of a Shinto Shrine. On some Buddhist temples, however, we can still see the heads of komainu carved of wood under the eaves of the temple. The carving in this photo was taken at the Dairin-ji Temple, which was originally founded in 1570.
