Built in 1884 as a horse racetrack for the Japanese emperor, the location is historically significant as the first western-style horse race track in Japan. However, due to the outbreak of WWII, the racetrack was shut down in 1942.
During the allied occupation, the grounds were repurposed as a golf course for the U.S. military. Once the property was returned to the city of Yokohama, the golf course was transformed into a public park in 1977.
Currently, the park boasts an impressive collection of flora, including more than 400 cherry blossom trees and 280 plum blossom trees. Surrounding the park's perimeter are maple, zelvoka, and ginkgo trees, as well as a lovely rose garden.

Church and Cherry Blossoms

The Yokohama Sacred Heart Cathedral, also known as the Yamate Catholic Church, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1862 by French missionaries. Sadly, the original structure was destroyed in the devastating 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake that rocked the Tokyo/Yokohama areas.
Fortunately, the church was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style by a Czech architect, and the construction was completed in 1937. This new structure is a testament to the resilience and determination of the church's community to rebuild their place of worship after such a tragic event.
Throughout the years, I have passed by the cathedral on numerous occasions. However, on this specific day, luck was on my side as I had the opportunity to visit during the full bloom of the cherry blossoms. The exquisite pink petals, juxtaposed against the backdrop of the Neo-Gothic architecture and robin-egg blue roof, instantly caught my eye.

Historic Spanish-Style Mansion from 1930

Berrick Hall, a registered historical building in Yokohama, was designed by American architect J.H. Morgan in 1930 as the residence of British trader B.R. Berwick. It is built in a distinctive Spanish style and features small quatrefoil windows and a tiled roof with a chimney. It was the largest residence in the pre-war district of Yamate, known for being a foreign residential area.
After being used as a residence until the start of World War II, it was donated to the Catholic Society of Mary in 1956 and was used as a dormitory for St. Joseph International School until 2000. Today, it is open to the public and is a popular wedding venue. The interior features black-and-white checkered tiles, frescoes on the walls, and lovely ironwork on the entryway and stairs.
Berrick Hall has many highlights, including a unique sunroom furnished with a lion-masked wall fountain and a women's bedroom sunroom with glimpses of the Yokohama Port. In 2001, the city of Yokohama purchased the site, and after restoration and repair work, the building and garden have been open to the public since 2002.

Japanese Maple Tree at Historic House

This is a photo of a Japanese maple tree captured at Berrick Hall, a registered historical building located in Yokohama that was built in 1930.
Japanese maple trees (紅葉 / momiji) have various types, and this one might be a "green cascade" Japanese maple, which has a drooping form that would need some support structure as it grows larger. During autumn, its leaves transform into vibrant shades of red and orange.
The estate of this mansion, which is quite sizable by Japanese standards, boasts flowering plants and trees, as well as a grassy area that serves as an ideal location for outdoor wedding ceremonies. The mansion's backdrop provides a picturesque setting for wedding photos and creates an atmosphere that feels like the wedding is taking place in a foreign country.
The mansion belonged to Bertram Berrick, a British trading merchant, whose company imported cosmetics, fragrance, paper, and stationery to Japan, while exporting Japanese paper, silk, and lacquer goods to England . Due to the increasing threat of World War II, Berrick left the house in 1938 and immigrated to Canada.

Yamate Museum: Historic Wooden Mansion from 1909

Originally constructed by a wealthy Japanese rancher in 1909, this mansion features a unique blend of Japanese and Western architectural and ornamental styles.
Today, it stands as the sole surviving wooden Western-style house in Yokohama to incorporate both design elements, having withstood the destructive forces of the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and WWII fire bombings. The mansion has since been converted into a museum, housing a collection of valuable historical documents that chronicle the culture and customs of Yokohama since the opening of its port.
In the accompanying shot, I attempted to capture the beauty of cherry blossoms blooming in the museum's gardens.

Fragrance Garden in City Park

Located in the southern section of Harbor View Park, atop the bluff with stunning views of the Port of Yokohama, lies the Fragrance Garden. This charming garden boasts of approximately 500 rose plants, along with over 100 other fragrant flowers. Whether visitors stroll through the garden during spring, summer, or fall, they will be enveloped with delightful scents.
Originally, Harbor View Park was a large area utilized by the British Army from 1864 to 1875. However, in 1989, the city of Yokohama created the sunken flower bed and planted roses to establish the Fragrance Garden in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the city's establishment and the 130th anniversary of the opening of the Port of Yokohama.
Nowadays, the Fragrance Garden and Harbor View Park are popular not only amongst locals who come for a leisurely walk, but also for tourists who arrive in buses and school children who come for field trips.

Spring Flowers in Waterfront City Park

Yamashita Park holds the title of the most beloved park in Yokohama, attracting a large number of visitors. It provides a picturesque view of the sea, the blue sky, and the waterfront scenery exclusive to the Port of Yokohama, complemented by the transition of tulips, roses, and other spring flowers.
To enhance the city's ambiance with colors, fragrances, and greenery, the city sponsors an annual flower festival called Garden Necklace 2023. This year’s festival involves a city-wide effort to plant flowerbeds and potted plants of mixed bulbs such as daffodils, muscari, and more than 120,000 red, pink, orange and yellow tulips, enriching the city's many parks, avenues, and boulevards that are used by not only the locals but also tourists from the world over.

The photograph captures a group of people having a picnic while enjoying the beautiful cherry blossoms, while the Yokohama Air Cabin urban ropeway travels high above the cherry blossoms, connecting Sakuragicho Station with the World Porter’s department store.
The ropeway, which began its operations in April 2021, is the newest addition to the waterfront skyline as it crosses over the Kishamichi Promenade. This promenade was planted with numerous cherry trees many years ago and runs alongside the original bridges and preserved railroad tracks that were used by steam locomotives from 1911 to as recently as 1986, to transport imported and exported goods between the nearby docks of the Port of Yokohama and warehouses located further inland.

One of six gates to Yokohama Chinatown, the Chukagai Higashimon (中華街東門; lit. Chinatown East Gate). In Chinese, the gate is referred to as Choyomon (朝陽門; lit. Sunrise Gate) and is the largest of the six gates.
The primary color associated with this gate is blue as its guardian deity is the Azure Dragon. The Azure Dragon is also depicted as a god of spring and prosperity, the guardian deity for the east, and is always depicted in tones of blue.
The gate is right across the street from Exit No. 1 of Motomomachi-Chukagai Station on the Minatomirai Line.

Italian Restaurant

There are several Italian restaurants scattered throughout Naka Ward and Nishi Ward in central Yokohama.
This restaurant, established over 50 years ago, always catches my eye whenever I walk by for its use of a lifebuoy alongside a huge figure of a St. Bernard. I understand the imagery of a lifebuoy and how it can easily represent Italy’s relation to the sea. The relation of a St. Bernard to Italy, however, is not so clear to me.
Maybe the shop owner had a St. Bernard they dearly loved who had passed away, and the figure helps to fill an empty space in their heart. Or maybe it was a gift from a very good customer who regularly visits, thus making it hard for the shop to discard it. Or maybe the “dog” is just used to advertise to potential patrons that the deck of the restaurant is pet friendly.

Historical Building and Museum

Constructed in 1922, this red brick building stands out amidst the contemporary structures that line the street adjacent to Yamashita Park in the Port of Yokohama.
Originally named British Mansion No. 7, the edifice served as the Yokohama branch of a British trading company, and remarkably, it is the sole trading house in Yokohama to have survived the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake.
In 1979, the structure underwent refurbishment and was renamed as the Toda Peace Memorial Hall. As a testament to its historic significance, the city of Yokohama granted the building an official Historic Building certification in 2001.

This photograph captures a stone pedestal and gas lamps embellishing the park's main entrance. The Hikawa Maru, a cargo and passenger ship that navigated the waters from Japan to Vancouver and Seattle between 1929 and 1941, is visible in the background.

Located just 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from Tokyo, the port of Yokohama once housed numerous heavy manufacturing industries and warehouses that eventually resulted in rising pollution and land degradation.
During my first visit to Yokohama's waterfront in the early 1980s, I discovered abandoned plots of land, neglected buildings, idle shipyards, and various old structures requiring significant renovation.
However, by the late 1990s, the waterfront had undergone a complete transformation, emerging as a vibrant city center with state-of-the-art ports, entertainment and amusement districts, historic buildings, parks, convention centers, new hotels, and office spaces catering to global industries.

Marine Tower at Night

The Port of Yokohama constructed this tower in 1961 as part of its centennial celebration, which became the tallest lighthouse globally until 2008 (106 m/347.76 ft).
During my first visit to the top of the tower in 1984, I was impressed by the diverse assortment of exotic birds that flew freely within an aviary.
In 2009, the tower underwent renovations to commemorate the Port of Yokohama's 150th anniversary.
Recently, the latest upgrades were completed in 2022, which included the addition of new restaurants, gift shops, a wedding hall, and an observation deck featuring an evening light show.

Port of Yokohama Nightscape

Yamashita Park boasts a picturesque view of Yokohama's port area, complete with the iconic Hikawa Maru, a retired Japanese ocean liner, and the striking Yokohama Bay Bridge.
The Hikawa Maru, which sailed the seas from 1930 to 1960, served various functions as a cargo passenger liner, hospital ship, and repatriation vessel for Japanese citizens and soldiers after World War II.
Since 1961, the ship has been permanently docked at Yamashita Park and transformed into a museum. I first explored the ship's classic design and beautiful interior during the mid-80s, and it has continued to entice me back ever since.
The cable-stayed Yokohama Bay Bridge, which opened in 1989, generated a sigh of relief by alleviating traffic congestion caused by container trucks traveling to and from nearby piers.
Crossing the bridge for the first time in 1989 was a thrilling experience for me, as it was the sole long-span bridge in Tokyo Bay and a favorite weekend driving destination.

American Style Diner

Since 2016, Penny's Diner has been serving up American-style hamburgers from its location in the Yokohama Boeki-Kaikan building.
Although the diner has an aesthetic reminiscent of 1950s America, what caught my attention is the historic building it's situated in.
The Yokohama Boeki-Kaikan building was constructed in 1929 as the headquarters for the Yokohama Trade Association, during the period of recovery following the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.
It's noteworthy that the building not only withstood the bombings of World War II but also still stands today, along with two other pre-war buildings on the same street near Yamashita Park and Osanbashi Pier.

The Japan Express Building was constructed in 1930 at the time the city of Yokohama was facing head-on reconstruction of the city that had been leveled by the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.
Shops in the building have taken advantage of the original woodwork and interior elements to evoke a pleasant mix of the Showa Era and modern aesthetics.
Exploring the building’s small entrance is like stepping back in to the early Showa Era where much has not changed for over 80 years!

The Sorairo Gelato shop can be found on the first floor of the Osanbashi Kyodo Building, which dates back to around April 1929.
The shop is situated along the street that leads to the Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal.
The pastel colors of this plaster relief on the shop’s exterior immediately caught my attention. I look forward to coming back when the weather is warmer to sample some of their delicious gelato.

Historical Mural Under Bridge

As you make your way towards the Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal, you will come across a beautiful mural located beneath the Yamashita Rinko Line Promenade pedestrian overpass. The artwork showcases the Port of Yokohama during the year 1870, featuring a collection of ships anchored offshore, cargo being unloaded from barges, foreign consulates, and the Japanese customs office.
It's worth noting that this mural is actually a faithful reproduction of a woodblock print originally created by Utagawa Hiroshige III and published in 1870. The original works of Hiroshige III can be found in various collections including the British Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Victoria & Albert Museum.

Small Duo-Tone Cafe

As you approach the Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal, the Hama Cafe catches your eye with its vibrant interior and two-tone exterior of understated white and faded red, situated on the left side of the street.
My first visit to this section of Osanbashi Pier was over 30 years ago in the 1990s, and back then, Hama Cafe and all the other establishments were pleasantly shaded by the trees and shrubs lining the street.
Unfortunately, the city decided to remove all the trees in 2018, which I sorely miss during my visits on scorching summer days.

Harbor Waterfront & Wharf

Zou-no-Hana Breakwater marks the original location of Japan's first modern international trading port, the Port of Yokohama, established in 1859. The breakwater extends about 160 meters into the bay and provides visitors with a picturesque view of illuminated artwork in the Zou-no-Hana wharf (center).
Additionally, two historically significant buildings are also lit up, namely the Yokohama Customs building (right), also known as Queen's Tower, built in 1934, and the Kanagawa Prefectural Government's Office (left), also known as King's Tower, constructed in 1928. The third tower, Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall, named Jack's Tower, erected in 1917, is presently undergoing renovations and is not visible.
Once serving as lighthouses, these three towers hold a special place in the hearts of sailors, who considered them as guardians of their safe voyage to Japan. According to urban legend, sailors felt relieved upon sighting these towers, and over time, they started to regard them as symbols of protection during their journey to Japan.

Nightscape of the Port of Yokohama

Zou-no-Hana Breakwater is an offshore structure located in the Port of Yokohama, which is a major seaport in Japan.
In this shot, I have used a lifebuoy to frame one of the many beautiful and picturesque views from the breakwater, where visitors can see the illuminated Yokohama Marine Tower and the Hotel New Grand, both of which are located right across the street from the lovely Yamashita-Koen Park on Yokohama’s waterfront.
The Marine Tower is a landmark of Yokohama and stands at 106 meters tall (348 ft) with observation decks on the 29th and 30th floors. It is illuminated at night and adds to the beautiful scenery of the area.
The Hotel New Grand is a luxury hotel that was built in 1927. It has a rich history and has hosted many famous guests over the years. The hotel offers a stunning view of the bay and is known for its excellent service and hospitality.

Historical Art Deco Government Building

The Kanagawa Prefecture Government Office was reconstructed in 1928 after being destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. It holds the distinction of being the second-oldest prefectural government office in Japan that is still operational.
This building, known as the "King's Tower," boasts an art deco design with geometric elements that were popular in early 20th century Europe, and has a central tower that resembles a five-story pagoda. Notably, it was designated as a national tangible cultural asset in 2019 and is frequently used as a filming location for various Japanese movies and TV dramas.

Former Bank Branch in Finance District

Bashamichi Building was born as the Yokohama Branch of Yasuda Bank, a prominent Japanese bank until the end of WWII. After WWII, Yasuda Bank resurfaced with a new identity as Fuji Bank and used this building for their Yokohama Branch. After a merger in 2002, Fuji Bank shuttered the building and its Yokohama branch office.
This closure led to the Architectural Institute of Japan appealing for the preservation of the building noting the building’s Palazzo architecture reminiscent of the Italian renaissance and its use of rough masonry (rustica) on the exterior. As a result, the building was granted recognition as a Yokohama City Historical Building in 2003 and was purchased by the city of Yokohama.
Today, Bashamichi Building is home to the Yokohama campus of the Graduate School of Film and New Media at the Tokyo University of the Arts, serving as an important cultural and educational center in the city.

This photograph captures the stunning night view of the Minatomirai waterfront district, as seen from the Bankoku Bridge. Originally constructed in 1903 and surviving the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, the current span was rebuilt in 1940. The name "Bankokubashi" translates to "bridge to 10,000 countries," which reflects its early significance in facilitating international trade through the Port of Yokohama.
Initially, the bridge served as the primary access point to the newly reclaimed land used for the Port of Yokohama and the customs house. Today, it has become a popular attraction for tourists and photographers seeking a picturesque view of the Minatomirai skyline. Furthermore, the Bankoku Bridge is one of the main entry points to the Red Brick Warehouse quarter.
The image also shows a long-exposure shot of the vibrant, rainbow-colored lights of passenger pods on the Yokohama Air Cabin urban ropeway connecting Sakuragicho Station with the World Porter’s department store. The ropeway, which started operating in April 2021, is the latest addition to the waterfront skyline.

The trio of trees can be found adjacent to a large rose garden, situated on the opposite side of the road from the historically renowned Hotel New Grand (established 1927). Depending on your vantage point, you may also be able to include Yokohama Marine Tower in the backdrop of the cherry blossoms.
These three trees were generously donated and relocated from Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan to Yokohama by the former Yokohama-East branch of Lions Club International back in 1993.

Modern-Day Marine Tower from Retired Lighthouse

As part of its centennial celebration, the Port of Yokohama constructed a tower in 1961 that became the tallest lighthouse in the world, towering at 106 meters (347.76 feet) until 2008. During my first visit in 1984, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a fascinating variety of exotic birds flying freely in an aviary at the top of the tower.
To commemorate the Port of Yokohama's 150th anniversary, the tower underwent renovations in 2009. Recently, in 2022, the tower received further upgrades, which included the addition of new restaurants, gift shops, a wedding hall, and an observation deck featuring a stunning evening light show.
Oimachi is a very small town near Odawara that features a park at the top of a small mountain that has a 19-hectare park of cherry trees supported and maintained by local volunteers.
Oi Yume-no-Sato Park is only about a 15-minute taxi ride from Shin-Matsuda Station on the Odakyu Line, or a 60- to 70-minute drive from Tokyo on the Tomei Expressway. Parking is available for free nearby at the farmers’ market.
Looking west from the peak of the park, you have a panoramic view that includes Kawazu-sakura cherry blossoms, which bloom between mid-February through early March, the neighboring town of Kaiseimachi, and a great view of Mt. Fuji.
Although the park has picnic tables, most visitors lay out a picnic blanket and enjoy a nice bento under the trees. The park was not crowded during my visit from about noon until sunset. This small and relatively unknown park allows you to take your time and enjoy the views, breath the fresh air, and enjoy the chirping of different birds feeding on the cherry blossom nectar.
The park is pet-friendly, has restrooms, a playground for children, and lots of space to walk around where you can get some nice photos without the huge crowds.

Cherry Blossoms & First Quarter Moon
Oi Yume-no-Sato Park, located on a mountaintop above the town of Oimachi, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a quaint park known for its early-blooming cherry blossoms and grand view of Mt. Fuji.
In this shot, I was lucky to catch a clear shot of a half-illuminated moon during its first quarter phase.

Lone Young Cherry Blossom Tree
Oi Yume-no-Sato Park is located within a short 15-minute taxi ride from Shin-Matsuda Station on the Odakyu Line, or a 60- to 70-minute drive from Tokyo on the Tomei Expressway.
The park sits at an elevation of only 185 m, has many mature trees in addition to newly planted young trees that will grow into beautiful full-grown trees for future generations.
This shot is a good example of how much green, grassy areas the park has where visitors can throw down a picnic blanket and enjoy a hanami drinking party or a hanami bento lunch!

Shades of Pink
From atop the peak of Oi Yume-no-Sato Park, you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the stepped slope of early-blooming cherry blossoms.
If you wait until evening, you can enjoy varying shades of pink as the setting sun breaks through the nearby woodland trees.
Be forewarned that the park is surrounded by woodlands of cedar trees, so if you are like me, you should probably wear a mask or at least stock up on antihistamine medication if you suffer from hay fever!

Sunset, Cherry Blossoms, & Mt. Fuji
As the day drew to a close, the setting sun cast a beautiful glow over the blossoming Kawazu-zakura cherry blossoms at Oi Yume-no-Sato Park, marking the end of an unusually warm February day.
The temperature rapidly dropped with the onset of sunset, but the park was left with a warm hue that bathed the majestic Mt. Fuji in golden hour light.

Mt. Fuji at Twilight
As observed from Oi Yume-no-Sato Park in Oimachi, Kanagawa Prefecture, the sun appears south of Mt. Fuji as it sets.
During this time of the year, the park's viewpoint provides a stunning view of the southern slopes of Mt. Fuji, which are bathed in soft, warm colors, while the eastern and northern slopes retain cooler tones.
Despite the fading light, the cherry trees located higher up on the mountain slopes of the park are still visible as they bask in the ambient golden-hour light.

This shot was taken from the peak of Mt. Kinkan (elevation 816 m/2,677 ft) in the northeastern region of the Izu Peninsula.
The trailhead to this peak is located near the Daruyama Kogen Resthouse parking lot, which is about a 2.5-hour drive from central Tokyo.
The hike to the peak is not very difficult, but is a bit steep in some sections. There were patches of snow on the trail with several locations becoming quite muddy.

Tiny Fishing Port on the Bay

View of Heda Port located on the eastern coast of Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. In the far distance lies the city of Shizuoka on the opposite side across the bay.
The climb to Mt. Kinkan (elevation 816 m/2,677 ft) from the nearby parking lot took only about an hour and that was with a heavy backpack full of camera and video gear on a muddy and snowy trail.
If visiting on a warm spring day when the trail is dry, you can easily reach the peak in less than an hour. Just be sure to wear shoes that provide some traction on the soles so as to avoid slipping on rocks.
Bonus tip: Try to visit on a weekday with no crowds and be extra quiet—you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some of the deer that live on these slopes. My dog and I saw two large bucks only 10 minutes from the trailhead!

Border Collie Resting on Mountain Peak
The winds were a bit chilly at the peak of Mt. Kinkan at an elevation of 816 m (2,677 ft), located about 136 km (84.6 mi) southwest of Tokyo.
She has a tendency to run ahead on the trail while I take my time pacing myself one step at a time. Here, she is taking a well-deserved rest after reaching the peak first.

Sunlit Cape and Fishing Port under Cloudy Sky
With the help of a telephoto lens, the peak of Mt. Darumayama offers a clear view of Cape Mihama, which stretches south to north creating the calm and sandy shores of Heda Port located on the eastern coast of Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
The trailhead to Mt. Darumayama can be easily accessed from the Asebigahara Parking Lot located about 220 meters away on the Nishi-Izu Skyline toll road.
On this photo shoot, my border collie and I hiked directly from Mt. Kinkan to Mt. Darumayama via Mt. Kodarumayama, which took me about 2 hours.
Be forewarned that the trails for Mt. Kodarumayama and Mt. Darumayama include many wooden staircases going straight up the side of the mountain. No special hiking gear is required, but be sure to bring enough water with you since you will work up a sweat climbing all those stairs!

Trail to Grass-Covered Mountain Peak
The winding Nishi-Izu Skyline toll road is a popular route for both motor and cycling enthusiasts. At the second curve, you can see the Asebigahara Parking Lot and the trail to Mt. Kodaruma, which if you keep heading north, will take you to the peak of Mt. Kinkan.
This shot was taken on my way up to the peak of Mt. Daruma (approx. 982 m/3,221 ft), which is mostly covered in kuma bamboo grass (kumazasa/Sasa veitchii). The trailhead is at the bottom of the frame near the highway.

Snow-Covered Slopes on the Bay
Looking southwest from the peak of Mt. Daruma (982 m/3,221 ft), we can see northern slopes of nearby mountain ranges where sunlight is unable to reach the landscape and melt the snow.
Further out, rays of sunlight stream through a break in the clouds lighting up a patch of Suruga Bay–the deepest bay in Japan with a maximum depth of 2,500 meters (8,202 ft).

Spotlights on the Bay
The peak of Mt. Daruma (982 m/3,221 ft) is most famous for its panoramic views of Suruga Bay and Mt. Fuji, which lies due west.
On this hike, however, Mother Nature presented me with an alternative view of sunbeams forming “stage lights” on the eastern shores of the Izu Peninsula.
