Kurima Island

  • Was in a rush to take this shot. The tour bus make a 10-minute stop for others to have smoke break or buy some cheap souvenirs. I ran down to the beach and frantically tooks shots as much as possible could in such a way that they would not have been too boring or uninspirational.

  • Known by several names: coast morning glory, seaside morning glory, beach morning glory. An introduced species, growing like a weed on a beach of Kurima Island in Okinawa. Japanese call it グンバイヒルガオの花 (gunbai-hirugao-no-hana), but the local Okinawans call it ハマカンダー (hamakandaa) or アミフィーバナ (amifibana).

Originally derived from the Chinese komainu (lion dogs), the original Ryukyuan culture of Okinawa (before they were annexed by the Japanese), use shisa (from a Sanskrit word that means lion). Similar to the komainu, the female shisa (on the left) has her mouth open to share goodness. Some say the left shisa is a actually a male who keeps his mouth open to scare unlucky or evil spirits away. Either way, I find them fascinating!

Tokyo Rickshaw
Tourists riding one of the ubiquitous rickshaws in the Asakusa area of Tokyo. Navigating among the many shiny glass and steel skyscrapers that fill the Asakusa skyline, rickshaws are just one of the many charms of Edo (former name of Tokyo) that have continued to thrive since the latter half of the 19th century. Once a menial form of labor, rickshaw drivers nowadays have to pass a technical exam and a knowledge test after undergoing training for a month. The drivers are naturally into fitness, have a love of history, and often can even speak several languages.

Brass Knuckles

Like brass knuckles pounding the coastline.
Run or drown.
A hollow trunk, eaten from inside out.
Blind me with rhythms,
Deafen me with weighty light.
Lost to time, lost to memory, lost to the crashing coastline.
